BCU is one of the largest universities in the UK, with over 22,000 students. The University has a long history of innovative approaches to teaching and its research is focused on supporting policy and practice. The BCU team are drawn from the Social Research and Evaluation Unit (SREU). The unit conducts research and also advises and mentors other colleagues within the University. The unit’s main area of research is the investigation, with a view to influencing policy, the experiences of disadvantaged groups including vulnerable women in the wider community. The unit is also well known for its work in the area of prisoner health, especially problematic drug use, HIV and other health issues.
The unit has long experience of both carrying out large scale quantitative surveys at institutional level and of conducting qualitative research projects which explore key issues in the lives of research participants. The unit supports the use of mixed methodological approaches in order to draw out key information.
